Portrait of Bhindranwale installed at SGPC’s Sikh Museum

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandhak Committee (SGPC) on Thursday installed a portrait of slain rebel Sikh leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwala at a Sikh museum situated in the premises of the Golden Temple.

SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar had earlier announced to install the portrait of the controversial religious leader on November 30. However, it went ahead to install the portrait a day earlier.

Addressing the gathering during the installation ceremony, Makkar said that the SGPC has always been honouring martyrs who have fought for the Sikh community, and it was a moment of pride to install the portrait of one of the great martyr of the 20th century.

Speaking on the occasion Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti, the Jathedar of the Akal Takht, hailed the SGPC for taking a ‘historic step’. He described Bhinderanwale as an “epitome of martyrdom”.

“Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandhak Committee (apex Sikh religious body) has installed the portrait of a great Sikh leader. I want to congratulate the whole community. And thank Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandhak Committee, its members and especially SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar,” said Harnam Singh Dooma, a Sikh priest.

To commemorate the occasion, a robe of honours “sarpao” was given to Isher Singh, the son of Bhindranwale by Joginder Singh Vedanti, Akal Takhat Jathedar. Bhindranwale’s son called his father a martyr, and brushed aside controversies regarding installation of his portrait.

“Those who are creating controversy don’t understand what is right or wrong. He rightly deserves such an honour. He sacrificed himself for community and for the Sikh religion,” said Isher Singh.

Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) President Simranjit Singh Mann also hailed Shiromani Gurdawara Parbhandak Committee (SGPC) for installing the portrait of late Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindrawala in Sikh museum. He described Sant Bhindrawala, the hero of Sikh community.

Sikh Leader Sant Jarnail Singh However not everybody is happy as some anti-sikh elements want to remove the portrait from Sikh museum. The ruling Akali Dal has been quiet over the SGPC move and close ally BJP is not too impressed either. BJP has asked the SGPC to review the portrait’s installation while the Punjab Congress has sought the intervention of Prime Minster Manmohan Singh and Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil in this matter.

Hindu terrorist Organisation Shiv Sena (Balthackrey) on Saturday brunt the effigy of SGPC (Shriomani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee) President Avtar Singh Makkar few kilometers from the museum at the busiest Gandhi Gate here. In early 90’s, they would never do such acts as they feared the active vigilance of Sikh youth.

The Punjab Congress on Saturday called for an all-party meet on Monday to resolve the controversy surrounding the installation of a portrait of slain rebel Sikh leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale at a Sikh museum in the Golden Temple premises.

Going to the extremes, Ex-Congress MLA Raj Kumar had demanded that a criminal case should be registered against the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandhak Committee (SGPC).

The Punjab government says it was not party to the decision and will not intervene in what it says is a religious matter.

”I don’t want to say anything on this. Ask SGPC, we can’t say,” said Prakash Singh Badal, Chief Minister of Punjab.

So what if political parties like bjp oppose such move? We are sikhs and we should fear no one. speak to anyone who knew sant ji personally, they have nothing but good things to say about this man who was so kind and loving, but unfortunately due to politics and biased Indian media, he was portrayed as otherwise, said Gursean Singh.

“The controversy is over. We have installed the portrait. It’s a religious matter,” says President SGPC, Avtaar Singh Makkar. In 2003, the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee had declared Bhindranwale a “martyr”.
